City of Cape Town’s bi-monthly magazine features an article on a project which Marco Bronze, Karen Bronze, Cobus Smit and Rosalind Wilson implemented last year.   The Project Apollo Space Management SAP REFX, which integrated with the FMES (facilities management enterprise system) project.

The FMES electronically monitors and controls 18 key sub-systems in the Civic Centre.  These include sub-systems for fire detection and suppression, audio evacuation, emergency control, heat, ventilation and air conditions, lifts and escalators, access control, visitor control, security, CCTV security cameras, energy management plant maintenance, tender box management and parking.

This was no easy feat.  The Civic Centre is the largest municipal property in Cape Town and serves as the political and administrative head-quarters of the local authority.

“The FMES enables the City to better manage its building facilities with proactive maintenance and emergency control, and smarter security measures”.

Closely aligned to FMES is a space management enterprise system.  Known as ‘Apollo’ it helps the City’s facilities managers accurately plan and allocate corporate office space to staff members, managed rental space, oversee maintenance and service issues, and assist with cost-centre allocations.   Through ‘Apollo’, AutoCad drawings of buildings and floor plans are loaded onto a standardised SAP system, which enables  a particular cost centre to pay only for the space it occupies.   Both FMES and Apollo enable the City8 to effectively manage its entire facilities portfolio and fixed assets, for its own properties as well as leased properties.   Besides being the only local government ‘smart building’ of it size in South Africa, the Civic is hot on the heels of some very prestigious commercial developments in Cape Town.
