We have all at some time heard about the LeadSA initiative, calling on all South Africans to take responsibility, make a difference.
Well, we as Britehouse have taken serious heed of this plea and we have taken our Corporate Social Investment relationship with Kwena Molapo Secondary school to new heights (www.kwenamolapo.co.za). What started out as a 1 week course of self-discovery and awareness with 10 learners, 3 educators, 2 facilitators and 14 Britehouse group representatives culminated in a celebratory showcase encompassing in excess of 1000 learners and 35 teachers.
The Principal agreed to set aside the day, Thursday 22 September, as a Heritage Day celebration to recognise aspects of our South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down, namely, creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat and the land in which we live.
This day was also the platform to launch the 4 key pressing initiatives they had decided to embark upon:
- Rainbow Culture Initiative
- Anti-Gangster Campaign
- Teenage Pregnancy
- Anti-Poverty and Litter Campaign
What unfolded was a splendid display of cultural dances in full historical dress by pupils and teachers alike, showcasing the Zulu, Shangani, Sotho, Pedi, Ghanaian and Venda tribes. What an awesome experience it was to see such a large group of young adults (the average age was 17) depicting their cultural dances to perfection and with such pride. We were further wowed by the entrance made by a beautiful white stallion as part of the Sotho dance display. Following the festivities we were treated to a diverse meal with the ultimate treat being a pot of Mopani worms.
As part of officially launching these campaigns, a selection of basic requirements to get the projects running was graciously handed over by Britehouse SSD. We can safely say that, in the quest to assist the school, help nurture the core group’s ability to develop their sense of self sustenance and further grow critical mass, we as a cohesive group have truly succeeded in Leading SA.
The core group have not only gone fishing, multiplied their fish and loaves but have rather re-invented the fishing industry by way of reaching the entire school body on one truly splendid, significant day – Heritage Day – no less!
